  About Post Tensioning Ironworker Certification
Prerequisites, Certification Exam, Continuing Education

Prior to applying for certification under this program, applicants must meet extensive prerequisite training requirements as follows...

Enrolment in Apprenticeship Training
The industry has consistently identified training as a key component in the successful installation of post-tension reinforcing. Recognizing this, the program places a considerable emphasis on formal training in an apprenticeship program that includes concrete reinforcing as its trade and is approved by the U.S. Department of Labor (or equivalent government entity outside the U.S.). Applicants for certification under this program must be enrolled as an apprentice in such a program, or be classified as a Journeyman.

Completion of Formal Training
Formal classroom training must be completed in both rebar or general reinforcing topics, and in post-tensioning. This classroom training must be done according to an approved training package that is accredited by the American Council on Education. In most cases* these training requirements are as follows:

Single Strand Unbonded (Monostrand) Post-Tensioning - A minimum of 40 hours in

rebar or general reinforcing topics, and an additional 40 hours of training in single

               strand unbonded tendons.

Bonded (Multistrand and Bar) Post-Tensioning - Completion of training required for

the single strand unbonded post-tensioning, plus an additional 20 hours of training

               in bonded post-tensioning.

*Note that provisions exist for am experienced registered Journeyman to substitute prior learning and

experience for a portion of the formal classroom training.

Certification Exam
Individuals who meet all of the prerequisite requirements are administered a final Certification Exam. This is a closed book exam designed to test the applicant's retention of knowledge relating to post-tensioning. This exam is administered by an approved proctor who is someone other than the post-tensioning instructor. This helps to ensure impartiality during the examining process. All applications and exams are reviewed and scored by Evaluation and Certification Services, LLC, who issues certification credentials to successful applicants.

Certification credentials are issued to successful applicants to identify them as having completed the requirements of this certification program. Certification credentials remain the property of ECS and may be revoked if they are used in a manner inconsistent with the program. Disclaimer and Limitations
The terms “certification” and “certified” as used in the context of this program are defined as meaning that ECS has verified (through reasonable effort) that an individual has completed the program requirements identified herein and has demonstrated their retention of applicable knowledge by achieving a minimum required score on a final exam. ECS is not an enforcement agency and does not perform ongoing evaluations of a person’s job site performance or fitness. ECS is not certifying that an individual is capable of performing any specific task(s) in the field.

Proficiency in working with post-tensioning systems is best obtained through a combination of formal classroom training and on-the-job field experience. Each individual will learn and display proficiencies at their own unique rate. Individuals, including the certified Ironworker, should not rely solely on the Post Tensioning Ironworker Certification™ as evidence or proof that they are capable of performing a specific operation in the field. Ironworkers, employers, and other project personnel should exercise their own diligence in determining fitness to perform specific tasks on the job.

An Ironworker who has obtained Post Tensioning Ironworker Certification™ should evaluate their own skill level and should perform only those tasks that they feel they are capable of performing in a safe and successful manner.
