Prerequisites,
Certification Exam, Continuing Education
Prior to applying for certification
under this program, applicants must meet extensive
prerequisite training requirements as follows...
Enrolment in Apprenticeship
Training
The industry has consistently identified training as
a key component in the successful installation of
post-tension reinforcing. Recognizing this, the
program places a considerable emphasis on formal
training in an apprenticeship program that includes
concrete reinforcing as its trade and is approved by
the U.S. Department of Labor (or equivalent
government entity outside the U.S.). Applicants for
certification under this program must be enrolled as
an apprentice in such a program, or be classified as
a Journeyman.
Completion of Formal
Training
Formal classroom training must be completed in both rebar or general
reinforcing topics, and in post-tensioning. This classroom training must be done according to an
approved training package that is accredited by the
American Council on Education. In most cases* these
training requirements are as follows:
Single Strand Unbonded (Monostrand)
Post-Tensioning - A minimum of 40 hours in
rebar or general reinforcing topics, and an
additional 40 hours of training in single
strand unbonded tendons.
Bonded (Multistrand and Bar) Post-Tensioning
- Completion of training required for
the single strand unbonded post-tensioning, plus an
additional 20 hours of training
in bonded post-tensioning.
*Note that provisions exist for am experienced registered
Journeyman to substitute prior learning and
experience for a portion of the formal classroom
training.
Certification Exam
Individuals who meet all of the prerequisite
requirements are administered a final Certification
Exam. This is a closed book exam designed to test
the applicant's retention of knowledge relating to
post-tensioning. This exam is administered by an
approved proctor who is someone other than the
post-tensioning instructor. This helps to ensure
impartiality during the examining process. All
applications and exams are reviewed and scored by
Evaluation and Certification
Services, LLC, who issues certification
credentials to successful applicants.

operation in the field. Ironworkers, employers, and
other project personnel should exercise their own
diligence in determining fitness to perform specific
tasks on the job.
An Ironworker who has obtained Post
Tensioning Ironworker Certification™ should evaluate
their own skill level and should perform only those
tasks that they feel they are capable of performing
in a safe and successful manner.
